Troops of the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, operating under Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have arrested two suspected gunrunners and recovered a large cache of ammunition during a security operation in Taraba State.
The operation, which took place on March 19, 2026, was carried out by soldiers stationed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Wukari. According to a statement released by the Army, the suspects were apprehended during a routine stop-and-search exercise along the Wukari–Ikyaior Road, a route that has recently come under increased surveillance due to security concerns.
The suspects, identified as Wisdom Soomga, 32, from Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, and Elisha Danladi, 38, a native of Wukari Local Government Area, were reportedly riding a motorcycle when they were intercepted by troops. A subsequent search led to the discovery of 444 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition concealed in their possession.
In addition to the ammunition, troops recovered ₦29,200 in cash, two mobile phones, ATM cards, charms, and other personal belongings. The motorcycle used by the suspects was also seized as part of the operation.
Military authorities confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody and undergoing further interrogation. Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the ammunition and its intended destination, amid concerns that such weapons could be linked to ongoing security challenges in the region.
The Commander of the 6 Brigade/Sector 3 OPWS, Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, commended the troops for their vigilance and professionalism. He noted that the successful interception reflects the Army’s renewed commitment to tackling criminal networks and curbing the proliferation of illegal arms in the state.
Brigadier General Akaliro emphasized that the operation aligns with the directives of the Chief of Army Staff to decisively eliminate criminal elements and restore peace in troubled areas.
He urged the troops to maintain the momentum and remain resolute in their mission to rid the region of all forms of criminality. He also reassured residents of Taraba State of the military’s continued dedication to protecting lives and property.
The commander called on members of the public to collaborate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could aid ongoing operations.
Furthermore, he reiterated the Army’s commitment to maintaining a strong reward and disciplinary system, noting that officers and soldiers who demonstrate exceptional courage, professionalism, and dedication in the line of duty will be duly recognized.
Security analysts say the latest arrest highlights the critical role of intelligence-led operations and routine checks in disrupting illegal arms movement, especially in regions prone to communal clashes and criminal activities.
The Nigerian Army has continued to intensify operations across Taraba and neighbouring states as part of broader efforts to strengthen internal security and ensure stability in the country’s North-Central region.
