A deadly attack has devastated the Mbalom community in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State, leaving multiple residents dead and widespread destruction in its wake.
The assault occurred on Easter Sunday, with reports indicating that at least 17 people were killed. Many others remain missing, as search and rescue operations continue in the surrounding areas.
According to eyewitnesses, armed assailants invaded the community, indiscriminately opening fire on residents and setting several houses ablaze. The sudden violence forced numerous families to flee into nearby bushes and safer locations, abandoning their homes amid the chaos.
The attack has left the once-peaceful farming community in ruins. Survivors are now displaced, grappling with trauma and loss, while properties—including homes and other structures—estimated to be worth millions of naira have been completely destroyed.
As of the latest updates, authorities have yet to issue a detailed official statement on the casualty figures or the identity of the attackers. Security agencies are, however, expected to intensify patrols and investigations to restore calm and apprehend those responsible.
This latest incident has reignited serious concerns about the persistent cycle of violence in parts of Benue State and the wider North-Central region. Community leaders and residents have renewed calls for stronger and more proactive security interventions to safeguard vulnerable rural populations from recurring attacks.
