Manchester City ended Arsenal’s six-month stay at the top of the Premier League table and condemned Burnley to relegation with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Turf Moor on Wednesday.
City entered the match knowing a win would take them top of the table on goals scored, while Burnley were aware that only victory would keep their survival hopes alive.
However, Erling Haaland’s clinical finish after five minutes — his 35th goal of the season — quickly ended any optimism for the home side as City seized an early lead.
Haaland later struck the post and had further chances, while Rayan Aït-Nouri and Rayan Cherki also went close as City pushed for a second goal. Despite their dominance, Pep Guardiola’s side had to settle for a narrow victory.
City, who trailed Arsenal by nine points in February, now lead the table on goals scored. Both teams sit on 70 points from 33 matches with an identical goal difference of +37.
Arsenal had led the title race since early October — a spell of approximately 200 days.
For Burnley, the defeat confirms their third Premier League relegation in five seasons. They remain on 20 points, 13 adrift of safety, with just four games remaining.
Manchester City now turn their attention to their FA Cup semi-final clash against Southampton on Saturday as they continue their pursuit of a domestic treble, having already secured the EFL Cup.
