MANCHESTER, England — Kobbie Mainoo capped a whirlwind week with a dramatic late winner as Manchester United beat Liverpool 3-2 on Sunday, officially securing a return to the Champions League after a two-year absence.
The 21-year-old academy graduate, who signed a new five-year contract just three days ago, struck late at Old Trafford to confirm United’s place among Europe’s elite for next season. The victory moves third-placed United to 64 points with three games remaining in the Premier League campaign, 12 points ahead of sixth-placed Bournemouth.
United appeared ready to rout their rivals early on Sunday, racing into a two-goal lead within the opening quarter-hour. Matheus Cunha opened the scoring in the sixth minute, and Benjamin Sesko doubled the advantage just eight minutes later.
The two goals inside 14 minutes marked the earliest Liverpool had trailed 2-0 in a Premier League fixture since February 2023. United nearly put the game out of reach before the break when Bruno Fernandes latched onto a ball from Bryan Mbeumo, but the Portuguese midfielder fired his effort agonisingly wide.
The momentum shifted immediately after the interval. In the 47th minute, Amad Diallo surrendered possession on the halfway line, allowing Dominik Szoboszlai to charge unchallenged toward goal. The Liverpool midfielder skipped past Harry Maguire and slotted the ball through the legs of Diogo Dalot to pull one back.
Liverpool drew level nine minutes later following a defensive lapse. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens played a pass directly to Alexis Mac Allister, who squared for Cody Gakpo to finish into an empty net.
With the match heading toward a tense draw that would have delayed United’s celebrations, Mainoo provided the heroics, his late strike sending Old Trafford into a frenzy as the Red Devils marched into next season’s UEFA Champions League.
The qualification caps a stunning turnaround under interim manager Michael Carrick, who has completely revitalised a squad that appeared broken under former manager Ruben Amorim, following a dismal campaign last season that saw the club miss out on European competition entirely.
Amorim’s tenure at Manchester United was defined by inconsistency and a lack of tactical clarity, which ultimately led to his dismissal after 21 Premier League matches this season.
Before being replaced by Carrick, Amorim’s record stood at eight wins, six draws, and seven losses. At the time of his departure, United were languishing in the middle of the table, having dropped points in over 60 percent of their fixtures. The poor form was largely attributed to a stagnant attack and the marginalisation of key assets like Mainoo.
In contrast, Carrick has overseen 14 league matches since taking charge, steering the club from mid-table instability to a guaranteed top-four finish.
Under Carrick’s tenure, United have amassed 34 points from a possible 42, securing 11 wins, one draw, and just two losses. This run of form effectively saved a season that had stalled under Amorim, who left the club with only 30 points from the opening 21 fixtures.
Carrick’s reliance on youth has been the catalyst for this transformation. Most notably, Mainoo has become the heartbeat of the side, starting 13 of the 14 league matches since the managerial change.
The midfielder, who was largely marginalised earlier in the season, has been the focal point of a side that now averages 2.42 points per game under Carrick — a stark contrast to the team’s early-season struggles.
