NIGERIA – Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party leader, Mr Peter Obi, has donated ₦25 million to the University of the Niger, Umunya, in support of scholarships and the continued development of the institution.
Obi made the donation during a visit to the university on Thursday, reaffirming his long-standing commitment to education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation across the country.
Speaking during the visit, the former governor said the intervention was aimed at assisting students and strengthening the growth of the university, which was established five years ago.
He expressed satisfaction with the rapid progress recorded by the institution since its establishment, noting that he has maintained a tradition of visiting and supporting the university annually.
“My last visit was to the teaching hospital in Ogidi. Today, I encouraged the students to remain dedicated to their studies,” Obi said.
“The world today is driven by knowledge, and the future of Nigeria rests in the hands of young people like them.”
Obi commended the Diocese on the Niger for its vision and commitment to educational development, describing the institution as a reflection of purposeful investment in human capital.
He also praised the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, for his contributions to education and institutional development in Nigeria.
According to Obi, no nation can rise above the quality of its education system and the strength of its human capital.
“I remain fully committed to the growth of education and the development of students in our country,” he stated. “A New Nigeria is Possible.”
The donation forms part of Obi’s broader efforts to support critical sectors such as education and healthcare, which he has consistently described as the foundation for national growth and sustainable development.
The University of the Niger, Umunya, has continued to expand its academic and infrastructural profile since its establishment, attracting increasing recognition within Nigeria’s educational sector.
