QUITO – For several members of Ecuador’s national football team, the journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup began on dusty pitches in some of the country’s poorest communities, where dreams of wearing the national jersey provided hope amid hardship.
Among the players whose stories have inspired millions is midfielder Moisés Caicedo, who rose from humble beginnings to become one of Ecuador’s biggest football stars and a key figure in the squad heading to the World Cup.
Now 24, Caicedo is preparing for his second appearance at the global tournament after establishing himself among the elite players in world football.
Former youth coach Galo Rodriguez, who worked with Caicedo as well as current national team defenders Willian Pacho and Piero Hincapié, said the players’ success was driven by discipline, determination, and unwavering ambition.
“Those who made it to the national team were the boys who always had clear goals,” Rodriguez said. “They dreamed big, stayed disciplined, and worked hard every day to achieve what they wanted.”
Ecuador will be making its fifth World Cup appearance and is aiming to surpass its best-ever performance, reaching the Round of 16 at the 2006 tournament in Germany.
National team coach Sebastián Beccacece has credited the squad’s success to the sacrifices made by players and their families. Ecuador secured a historic second-place finish in South American qualifying, behind reigning world champions Argentina.
According to Beccacece, many of the players paid a heavy personal price in pursuit of their football careers, spending years away from their families while competing in highly demanding and competitive environments.
“They know the sacrifice required to reach this level,” Beccacece said. “Being away from home and family is often the price they have had to pay to pursue their dreams.”
Ecuador will begin its World Cup campaign against Ivory Coast on June 14, carrying the hopes of a nation eager to see its golden generation make history on football’s biggest stage.
