US-Iran Reach Agreement to Halt Attacks and Restart Diplomatic Talks

Table of Content

Iran and the United States have agreed to halt recent hostilities in the Gulf and renew talks regarding their dispute over the Strait of Hormuz, a US official said on Sunday, June 28, raising hopes of saving an interim peace deal.

According to the US official, technical talks would continue on a 14-point memorandum agreed on June 17, adding that both sides would stand down for now and allow vessels to move freely.

Axios reports that talks are expected to resume in Qatar on Tuesday, citing a senior US official.

The move follows days of tit-for-tat strikes after an Iranian projectile hit a cargo vessel in the strait on Thursday. Washington and Tehran then accused each other of breaching the interim ceasefire.

Hostilities continued into the weekend. Earlier, the US military said it had struck Iran again, hours after a tanker was hit in the strait on Saturday. Iran also launched missiles and drones at US military sites in Kuwait and Bahrain after President Donald Trump renewed threats against the Islamic Republic.

A US official said there were no reported American casualties or major damage.

Meanwhile, Israel struck Iran-backed Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, underscoring wider regional tensions that could complicate the truce.

Oil prices rose on Monday following the latest exchange of fire, with Brent crude up around 0.5% by early afternoon in Asia.
