Peter Obi Takes Legal Action Against Kenneth Okonkwo, Seeks ₦5 Billion in Damages and Public Apology

NIGERIA – Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, has commenced legal action against actor-turned-politician Mr Kenneth Okonkwo over what he describes as false, malicious, and defamatory statements allegedly made against him during a live television appearance.

In a formal demand letter dated June 9, 2026, and signed by Chief Alex Ejesieme (SAN) of Alex Ejesieme (SAN) & Co. (Madiba Chambers), Obi’s legal team demanded the immediate withdrawal of the statements, a public apology, and the payment of ₦5 billion in damages.

The dispute stems from comments allegedly made by Okonkwo during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on June 8, 2026. According to the letter, the remarks were subsequently amplified through various media platforms, including YouTube and other social media channels.

The development marks a significant escalation in the growing political rift between Obi and Okonkwo, who were once close political allies during Nigeria’s last presidential election cycle.

Allegations at the Centre of the Dispute

According to Obi’s lawyers, Okonkwo alleged during the broadcast that Obi and leaders of the NDC in the South-East demanded a ₦10 million payment from House of Representatives aspirants after they had paid the official expression-of-interest fee required by the party.

The legal demand further states that Okonkwo claimed documentary evidence existed to support the allegation, including a receipt purportedly showing payment.

Among other statements cited in the letter are claims that Obi personally compiled the party’s list of candidates from his hotel room at the Johnwood Hotel, that he warned aspirants he intended to deceive them, that he travels abroad to collect money from people, and that he, together with some NDC leaders in the South-East, was involved in criminal activities.

Obi’s legal team strongly rejected the allegations, describing them as entirely false, reckless, and malicious.

“The above statements, in their natural and ordinary meaning, falsely and maliciously represent our client as a person who demands, solicits, organises and collects bribes; who extorts, defrauds and swindles political aspirants of their money,” the letter stated.

The lawyers argued that the statements portray Obi as a fraudster, scammer, and dishonest political actor and were capable of causing serious damage to his public image and reputation.

‘Attack on Reputation’

In the four-page correspondence addressed directly to Okonkwo, Obi’s lawyers maintained that the allegations lacked any factual basis and were calculated to lower the former governor in the estimation of members of the public.

They stated that the remarks exposed Obi to public ridicule, hatred, and contempt and undermined his reputation as a statesman and political leader.

The legal team further noted that the statements were made on a live television programme before being republished across multiple online platforms, increasing their reach and potential impact.

“It is particularly disturbing that the said statements were made by you on live television and were thereafter republished, broadcast and widely circulated through online and social media platforms,” the letter stated.

The lawyers argued that the remarks went beyond legitimate political criticism and crossed the boundaries of fair comment.

Demands and Seven-Day Deadline

Obi’s legal team has given Okonkwo seven days from receipt of the letter to comply with a number of demands.

These include the immediate withdrawal of all allegedly defamatory statements, a clear and unreserved public apology to Obi, and publication of the apology across the same platforms where the original comments appeared, including Channels Television, YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook.

The lawyers also demanded that the apology be given equal or greater prominence than the original statements and that Okonkwo provide a written undertaking not to publish similar statements in the future.

Additionally, Obi is seeking ₦5 billion in general, aggravated, and exemplary damages for the alleged injury caused to his reputation and public standing.

The letter warns that failure to comply will leave Obi with no option but to pursue legal action, including claims for damages, injunctive relief, public retraction, and the full cost of legal proceedings.

Freedom of Expression Has Limits, Lawyers Say

While acknowledging the constitutional right to freedom of expression, Obi’s legal team argued that such rights do not extend to making false statements capable of damaging another person’s reputation.

“The law is settled that while citizens are entitled to hold and express opinions, no person is entitled, under the guise of political speech, to publish false statements which impute criminality, fraud, dishonesty or moral depravity to another,” the letter stated.

“The right to freedom of expression does not extend to the reckless destruction of another person’s reputation.”

Political Fallout Ahead of 2027

The legal confrontation highlights the deepening tensions between Obi and Okonkwo, who were previously aligned politically.

Okonkwo was among Obi’s prominent supporters during the 2023 presidential election campaign but later distanced himself from the former Labour Party candidate and became increasingly critical of his political decisions and leadership style.

The latest dispute comes amid heightened political activity and realignments ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with opposition figures and emerging political movements seeking to reshape the country’s political landscape.

As of the time of filing this report, Kenneth Okonkwo had not publicly responded to the legal demand or the allegations contained in the letter.

The Credibility News will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as the matter unfolds.
