A 100-level student of the Federal University of Technology Owerri, identified as Chinedu Chibuzor Christogonus, has died after allegedly being assaulted by members of the Man O’ War security group following accusations that he stole N13,000.
The incident reportedly occurred after the student was accused of theft and taken into custody by members of the security outfit. According to witnesses, Chinedu was subjected to prolonged interrogation and punishment while in their custody.
Sources said the student later became unconscious and unresponsive. He was subsequently rushed for medical attention but was confirmed dead, sparking outrage among students and members of the university community.
The incident has triggered widespread condemnation on campus, with many students questioning the conduct and authority of security groups operating within the institution. Reports indicate that protests broke out following the student’s death, and the Man O’ War office on campus was allegedly set ablaze by angry demonstrators.
Police Confirm Arrest of Three Suspects
Confirming the incident, the Imo State Police Command announced the arrest of three suspects in connection with the student’s death.
Police spokesperson Henry Okoye said preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased was physically assaulted over allegations of theft.
“Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have arrested three suspects in connection with the alleged murder of a 21-year-old student of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Chinedu Chibuzor Christogonus, whose death occurred under suspicious circumstances on May 30, 2026,” Okoye stated.
The suspects were identified as Chukwuemeka Benedict (21), Kelechi Gospel Ikenna (24), and Obioma Anastasia (21), all of whom are reportedly 500-level students of FUTO.
According to the police, initial findings suggest that Chinedu was restrained and assaulted, resulting in severe injuries.
“The deceased was subsequently rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel,” Okoye added.
Case Transferred to SCID
The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Audu Garba Bosso, reportedly ordered immediate intervention upon receiving information about the incident, leading to the arrest of the suspects.
The police spokesperson further disclosed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a comprehensive investigation.
The Imo State Police Command assured the family of the deceased, the university community, and the public that it remains committed to uncovering the full circumstances surrounding Chinedu’s death and ensuring that all those found culpable are brought to justice.
