Several residents of the Egbeda-Egga community in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, one of the North Central states, have been rendered homeless after a rainstorm reportedly destroyed more than 40 residential buildings.
Reports from the community on Thursday indicated that the unexpected rainfall on Wednesday was accompanied by a violent storm that destroyed houses, churches, businesses, and schools, causing damage worth millions of naira.

The National President of the Egbeda-Egga Development Union (EDU), Dr Emmanuel Dare Otitolaiye, said the scale of destruction has left many families struggling to cope.
He said, “Several residents have been displaced and are currently taking shelter with neighbours and other relatives.
“We urge the authorities to provide immediate support for our people who have lost their homes, businesses, and sources of livelihood,” he added.
Dr Otitolaiye further stressed that the community urgently requires emergency relief materials, including shelter, food, and medical support, to help victims recover from the disaster.
Mr Dayo Thomas, the Publicity Secretary of the Okun Development Association (ODA), a community-based organisation, also expressed sadness over the incident, noting that it has caused immense losses and hardship for residents of the Egbeda-Egga community.
He urged stakeholders to provide shelter, food, and medical assistance to the victims.

“The rainstorm destroyed over 40 houses, while churches and businesses were also affected, leaving many families without homes or livelihoods.
“We believe that collective efforts can help alleviate the suffering and rebuild the community.
“We stand in unwavering solidarity with the affected families and individuals, acknowledging their pain and struggles. Our thoughts are with those who have lost their homes and livelihoods. We pray that they find comfort and strength during this difficult time,” he said.
Meanwhile, an official of the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said the agency is aware of the incident but is awaiting an official report before taking action.
“The agency is aware of the incident. We are already preparing to move into the community to assess the extent of the damage and determine the next line of action,” the source said, requesting anonymity.
