A prominent businessman, farmer, and philanthropist, Alhaji Bala Sanin Kawo, has reportedly been killed by suspected bandits in Katsina State despite the payment of more than N500 million in ransom for his release.

The deceased, who hailed from Dandume Local Government Area of the state, was widely known for his business ventures, agricultural investments, and humanitarian contributions across Northern Nigeria.

Sources said Alhaji Bala was abducted by armed bandits on the outskirts of Dandume town about two weeks ago.

According to a family source who spoke on condition of anonymity, the kidnappers initially demanded more than N1 billion as ransom but later agreed to accept N500 million following negotiations.

“He was abducted on the outskirts of Dandume town by bandits two weeks ago. They initially demanded over N1 billion, but after negotiations, they agreed to collect N500 million.

“Despite the payment of more than N500 million by his family and associates, the kidnappers went ahead and killed him,” the source said.

The killing has heightened concerns over the persistent insecurity in parts of Northern Nigeria, where kidnapping for ransom continues to threaten lives, businesses, and livelihoods.

The incident comes barely two days after reports emerged of the death of retired Army General Abubakar Rabe, who was also reported to have died while in captivity after being abducted by bandits in Katsina State.

Residents and stakeholders have renewed calls on security agencies and government authorities to intensify efforts to combat banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes across the country.

Many residents described the latest incident as a tragic reminder of the growing security challenges facing communities in the North and called for more decisive action to protect lives and property.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies in Katsina State had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
