The Islamic terrorist group Boko Haram, alongside the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), has carried out coordinated attacks on different locations in Borno State, northern Nigeria, leaving several soldiers dead, including Brigadier General O. Braimah.
The Nigerian Defence Headquarters told reporters that the terrorist groups had attacked the base in Benisheikh but were overpowered by the Nigerian military.
The attackers targeted the communities of Pulka and Bakin Ruwa in Gwoza district at exactly 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday. In response to the attack, Commander of the 29 Brigade, Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, led the army into a fierce battle that compelled the terrorist groups to retreat, Defence Headquarters spokesperson Major‑General Micheal Onoja said, also stating that clearance operations were still ongoing.
Two unverified sources told Reuters that the military base was decimated, which led to the killing of Brigadier General Braimah and several soldiers, alongside damage to multiple military vehicles.
A witness involved in the Benisheikh reinforcements said the military operatives who were killed were evacuated on Thursday morning after the deadly attack, which was said to have lasted for about three hours.
The unrest and violence have ravaged Nigeria for over 17 years and have killed thousands, with more than two million people displaced from their homes and communities.
