A United States senator, Ted Cruz, has accused the government of Nigeria of being complicit in ongoing violence in parts of the country, particularly in northern and central regions, intensifying international scrutiny of Nigeria’s security challenges.
Cruz made the allegations in recent public remarks, arguing that Nigerian authorities have failed to adequately respond to repeated attacks on civilians by armed groups. He said the scale and persistence of the violence raise serious concerns about government responsibility, suggesting that prolonged inaction could point to negligence or deeper institutional shortcomings.
The senator referenced attacks on Christian communities, alleging that churches have been destroyed and thousands killed over the years. His comments have reignited debate in Washington over whether the situation in Nigeria should be characterised primarily as religious persecution or as part of a broader security crisis involving insurgency, banditry, and communal conflict.
Cruz’s remarks come amid reports that Nigeria has spent significant sums on lobbying efforts in the United States.
