BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil — A deadly plane crash in Belo Horizonte has claimed three lives after a small aircraft crashed into a residential building shortly after takeoff.
The airplane, which had five occupants on board, crashed into a three-storey residential building on Monday in Brazil’s southeastern city of Belo Horizonte, local officials and firefighters said.
The pilot and co-pilot were killed in the crash, the fire department said in a statement. Three passengers were rescued in serious condition and taken to hospital. Hours later, the Minas Gerais state government confirmed that one of the passengers had died in hospital. The other two remain hospitalised and are in stable condition.
No residents were injured, and there was no structural damage to the building, the fire department added.
The plane took off early in the afternoon from Pampulha Airport, approximately 8 kilometres (5 miles) from central Belo Horizonte, bound for São Paulo, according to the fire department.
The aircraft remained airborne for only a few minutes before crashing into the residential building.
