ABUJA — The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) successfully held its inaugural National Convention on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the Los Angeles Event Centre, Ahmadu Bello Way, in the Federal Capital Territory. The event marked a significant milestone for the party as it positions itself as a formidable contender ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Delegates from across Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT attended the convention, which was monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Proceedings were described as orderly, reflecting a commitment to internal democracy.
A key outcome of the convention was the adoption of a zoning formula for the party’s 2027 presidential ticket. The NDC resolved to zone its presidential candidate to the Southern region of the country for the 2027 election cycle, with an understanding that power would rotate back to the North in subsequent cycles.
Party leaders emphasised that the decision aims to promote inclusivity, national unity, and fair rotation of power across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe, National Chairman of the NDC, addressed delegates during the convention, highlighting the party’s readiness to offer credible leadership and solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.
The convention ratified the National Working Committee and other key structures to drive the party’s grassroots mobilisation efforts. The NDC aims to establish a functional presence in all 774 local government areas in the coming months.
The event attracted significant attention from political stakeholders, with reports of defections and interest from various politicians disillusioned with the current political order. Notable figures and groups have shown alignment with the NDC’s vision, though formal declarations are still pending.
Speakers at the convention stressed four core pillars: credible leadership, aggressive economic reforms, massive youth inclusion, and enhanced national security. The party pledged to field competent candidates focused on service and good governance.
The NDC also ratified its constitution and approved strategies for sustained national mobilisation.
Security was tight but professional, with no reported incidents. INEC observers commended the transparent conduct of the proceedings.
Analysts view the NDC’s maiden convention as a bold step in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape. With structures now being strengthened nationwide, the party is gearing up to challenge the dominance of established parties in 2027.
As the newly empowered National Executive Committee assumes office, all eyes will be on whether the NDC can convert convention momentum into tangible national impact.
