UK PM Starmer Resignation Rumours Swirl, but Insiders Say He Is Staying Put

LONDON – Speculation over the future of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer intensified on Saturday after a newspaper report claimed he was considering stepping down, although government insiders insisted he remains focused on leading the country.

The Observer reported that Starmer was expected to announce a timetable for his departure as early as Monday, citing senior Labour Party figures who believe the prime minister is weighing his options amid mounting political pressure.

According to the report, Starmer was discussing the situation with his wife at his Chequers country residence before making a final decision on his future.

However, a government source pushed back against the claims, saying Starmer remains committed to his role and is concentrating on governing. The source pointed to the prime minister’s recent public statements, in which he vowed to fight any challenge to his leadership.

Pressure on Starmer has been building for months but escalated sharply on Friday after political rival Andy Burnham secured a seat in Parliament, giving him a platform from which he could launch a formal leadership challenge.

Speaking on Friday, Starmer rejected suggestions that he should step aside and urged Labour members to avoid damaging internal divisions.

Starmer led Labour to a landslide election victory in 2024, ending years of Conservative rule. However, his popularity has fallen significantly following a series of controversies and policy reversals that critics say have undermined public confidence in his leadership.

Many voters who backed Labour hoping for improvements in public services and living standards have become increasingly frustrated, while dissatisfaction within the party has continued to grow.

According to a Reuters tally, more than 100 Labour lawmakers—roughly a quarter of the party’s MPs in the House of Commons—have publicly called on Starmer to resign or set out a timetable for his departure.

The Observer report, which did not identify its sources, said Starmer had concluded his position may no longer be sustainable after consultations with cabinet ministers, advisers, donors and trade union leaders.

Andy Burnham, the 56-year-old Mayor of Greater Manchester, is widely viewed as a potential successor should Starmer step down or lose a leadership contest.

Burnham strengthened his position within Labour by winning a parliamentary by-election on Friday, defeating challenges including candidates backed by Nigel Farage’s right-wing populist movement.

Although Burnham has not formally challenged Starmer, he used his victory speech to promise a new direction for Britain. Allies of the Greater Manchester mayor have reportedly urged Starmer to step aside voluntarily and allow a transition of leadership.

Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting has also indicated he would be willing to enter a leadership contest if one were held.

Meanwhile, The Times reported that Burnham would remove Chancellor Rachel Reeves if he became prime minister, with advisers reportedly concluding that retaining her would not represent a sufficient break from the current administration. The report could not be independently verified.

If Starmer were to resign or be removed, Britain would install its seventh prime minister in just over a decade, highlighting a period of extraordinary political instability marked by public dissatisfaction over economic challenges, public services and immigration policy.
