KANO, Nigeria — Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso has expressed deep concern over comments made by Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir at an event in Kano over the weekend, describing the remarks as potentially divisive and warning against rhetoric capable of undermining national unity.

Kwankwaso said statements that promote division and disunity should be firmly discouraged, particularly at what he described as a critical moment in Nigeria’s history.

He said it was especially troubling that such rhetoric came from a religious leader of Sheikh Jingir’s stature and influence.

“Let it be clearly stated: the good people of Kano do not endorse or support these divisive remarks,” Kwankwaso said.

The former Kano State governor stressed that political and religious leaders have a responsibility to promote truth, unity and reconciliation, rather than make statements capable of deepening divisions.

“Political and religious leaders alike carry a solemn responsibility to uphold truth, foster unity, and advance reconciliation,” he said.

Kwankwaso added that Nigerians should not allow their voices to be used to undermine the country’s unity and national cohesion.

“We must not lend our voices to utterances capable of undermining the very foundation of our nationhood,” he said.

On the 2027 general elections, Kwankwaso said the polls would provide Nigerians with an opportunity to assess the performance of the current administration and decide whether to retain or reject it.

“The 2027 general elections will be an opportunity for Nigerians to reward good governance with resounding support and to reject poor performance at the polls. This administration has earned the latter,” he said.

Kwankwaso concluded his statement by wishing Nigeria well, saying: “God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
