NEW YORK — Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) for the January 2027 general election, has honoured the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States.

Obi said he joined prayers and a remembrance service in New York to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the tragedy. In a statement shared on his official social media account, he said the pain of the attacks remained deeply felt by families who lost loved ones and by the American people.

“Twenty-five years later, the pain of that tragic day remains deeply felt by the families who lost loved ones and by a nation that has continued to carry their memory,” he said.

He also paid tribute to firefighters, police officers, first responders and civilians who risked their lives to save others during the attacks. According to Obi, their courage and selflessness remain a powerful reminder of humanity’s capacity for goodness, even in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

He said the sanctity of human life should unite people across nationality, race, religion and political differences, particularly during moments of crisis.

“Human life is sacred, and our shared humanity must unite us, especially in our darkest moments,” Obi said.

The NDC presidential candidate extended his sympathy, prayers and solidarity to the families of the victims and the American people. He prayed for the peaceful repose of those who lost their lives and called for a world where peace, compassion, justice and respect for human life prevail over hatred and terrorism.

Obi added that he subsequently continued with high-level meetings in New York, which had concluded at the time of his statement.

“We remain prayerful to God Almighty for a peaceful world,” he said.
