NIGERIA – A fresh disagreement has emerged within Nigeria’s opposition camp after former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, citing his age and health.
Kwankwaso reportedly made the call while receiving members of the Fulani Farmers Association at his residence in Abuja.
The development comes amid ongoing discussions among opposition political figures over a possible coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, had earlier ruled out stepping down for Atiku, stating that the issue now involved two different political parties. Obi maintained that any decision on the matter would have to be considered within the context of the parties coming together.
Kwankwaso’s latest remarks are likely to intensify debate over the leadership and direction of the opposition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
