Gunmen suspected to be terrorists attacked worshippers at two churches in Ariko community, Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State, during Easter celebrations, leading to a military rescue operation that saved 31 hostages.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, targeted First ECWA Church and St. Augustine Catholic Church, throwing the community into panic.
Troops of the Nigerian Army swiftly responded to a distress call and pursued the attackers into nearby areas. In a fierce gun battle, they overpowered the terrorists and rescued 31 abducted worshippers, including one injured victim who is receiving medical attention.
Military authorities confirmed that five bodies were recovered at the scene.
Troops have since intensified pursuit operations to track down the fleeing assailants, with additional forces deployed to prevent further attacks.
The councillor representing Awon Ward, Mr Mark Bawa, told our reporter that casualty figures were still being verified. Community sources had earlier reported that up to seven people may have been killed, but this number has not been officially confirmed by security agencies.
Residents said the attackers operated for a prolonged period without interruption, expressing frustration over delayed security response.
The attack comes barely two months after a similar incident in Kurmin Wali community, also in Kachia LGA, where scores of worshippers were abducted during a church service.
The Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, said he would provide updates as investigations continue.
