BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA – Football fans across Argentina and around the world erupted in celebration after Lionel Messi delivered a historic performance in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria on Monday, securing the defending champions’ place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 38-year-old captain overcame an early setback after missing a first-half penalty before responding in spectacular fashion, scoring both goals for Argentina and setting a new all-time World Cup scoring record.

In Buenos Aires, supporters endured a tense moment when Messi failed to convert from the spot, fearing Austria could capitalise on the opportunity. However, their anxiety quickly turned into jubilation as the Argentine superstar found the net twice to lead his team to victory.

“I was afraid when Messi missed the penalty that Austria might launch a counterattack, but luckily he managed to redeem himself in this match. This was the game where he proved his worth and reached the absolute peak of the World Cup scoring charts,” one fan said.

The celebrations extended far beyond Argentina’s borders. In Dhaka, Bangladesh, thousands of passionate Argentina supporters gathered at Dhaka University to watch the match, highlighting the South American nation’s immense global following.

“Since I started understanding football, Argentina has always been my favourite team and I support them. We won the World Cup in 2022, and this is probably Messi’s last World Cup. We want to see him lift the trophy again. That is my biggest hope in this tournament,” a supporter said.

Messi’s goals, his 17th and 18th in World Cup competition, cemented his place in football history and sparked celebrations among fans worldwide.

With the victory, Argentina secured a second consecutive win in Group J, collecting six points and booking a place in the Round of 32 with one group-stage match still to play.

The result further strengthened Argentina’s status as one of the tournament favourites as they continue their quest to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup title.
