The Borno State Police Command has confirmed the killing of four police personnel and a member of a local hunters’ group by suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists.
The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, noting that the officers paid the supreme price during coordinated midnight attacks on Nganzai and Mobbar Local Government Areas of the state.
According to him, at about 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, armed terrorists suspected to be members of Boko Haram and ISWAP attacked the Nganzai Divisional Police Headquarters in an attempt to overrun the town.
He explained that the Divisional Police Officers, in collaboration with operatives of the Police Mobile Force and the Crack Squad on special duty, engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle.
The security operatives successfully repelled the coordinated attacks on Nganzai and Damasak communities, restored normalcy, and reinforced security deployments in the affected areas.
ASP Daso added that the attackers deployed Rocket‑Propelled Grenades and other sophisticated weapons, causing damage to parts of the station and partially burning an unserviceable Armoured Personnel Carrier.
“Regrettably, four police personnel paid the supreme price in the line of duty,” he said.
In a related development, the PPRO disclosed that at about 2:40 a.m. on the same day, terrorists attacked the Malam Fatori Internally Displaced Persons camp in Damasak, Mobbar LGA, targeting a CJTF and hunters’ duty post at the entrance of the camp.
During the attack, a member of the hunters’ group, identified as Atom Abua, 40, was killed, while about 20 thatched houses and properties were destroyed.
He further stated that combined teams of the police, military, Civilian Joint Task Force, and local hunters responded swiftly to both incidents, repelled the attackers, and prevented further damage.
The statement added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, has deployed additional personnel and operational assets to the affected areas to strengthen security, intensify ongoing operations, and prevent further attacks.
Daso said the CP commended the bravery and resilience of the officers who confronted the assailants and prevented them from overrunning the communities.
“He also extends his condolences to the families of the deceased personnel and assures that the Command is committed to tracking down the perpetrators and bringing them to justice.
“Members of the public are urged to remain calm, vigilant, and continue to support security agencies with credible information,” he added.
The Command reiterated its commitment to the protection of lives and property across Borno State.
