Ghana Flood Crisis: Families Trapped on Rooftops as Waters Rise

Table of Content

ACCRA, GHANA – Hundreds of residents were forced to seek refuge on rooftops after torrential rainfall triggered severe flooding across parts of Ghana’s capital, Accra, submerging homes, roads, and vehicles.

Among the worst-hit areas was the Alajo neighbourhood, where rising floodwaters inundated residential communities, leaving many families stranded as emergency responders worked to reach affected residents.

The Ghanaian government said emergency services had been deployed to flood-affected communities, with personnel from the police, fire service, military, and the National Disaster Management Organisation assisting rescue efforts and helping to manage traffic disrupted by the flooding.

In a statement posted on the Presidency’s official Facebook page on Monday, President John Dramani Mahama urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid travelling through flooded roads.

Authorities also appealed to the public to follow official safety guidance as heavy rainfall continued across parts of the country, warning that floodwaters could rise further.

Seasonal flooding has become a recurring challenge in Accra, where rapid urbanisation, inadequate drainage infrastructure, and blocked waterways frequently worsen the impact of heavy rains.

Emergency officials continue to monitor the situation as rescue operations and damage assessments remain underway.
