Kings of Spain: Rashford on Target as Flick’s Barcelona Brush Aside Real Madrid to Retain LaLiga Crown

Table of Content

BARCELONA — The Camp Nou erupted into a sea of maroon and blue on Sunday as Barcelona turned the world’s biggest club fixture into a coronation. A clinical 2-0 victory over arch-rivals Real Madrid saw Hansi Flick’s men officially secure their 29th LaLiga title with three games to spare, sparking scenes of jubilation across Catalonia.

The victory moves the Blaugrana, who secured back-to-back titles, to an untouchable 91 points, with Real Madrid 14 points behind in second place.

Real Madrid entered the match needing a miracle to keep the title race alive, but those hopes were incinerated in a blistering opening 20 minutes.

In the 9th minute, after Antonio Rüdiger bundled over Ferran Torres, Marcus Rashford stepped up to a dead ball and unleashed a trademark curling strike into Thibaut Courtois’ top-left corner, becoming the first Barcelona player to score a direct free-kick in a Clásico since Lionel Messi in 2012.

The stadium was still vibrating from the opener when Barcelona struck again in the 18th minute. Fermín López whipped a dangerous ball into the box, met by a piece of Dani Olmo magic — a deft backheel that fell perfectly for Ferran Torres. The Spaniard made no mistake, rifling a fierce shot into the roof of the net to effectively end the contest before the first half-hour had passed.

For Real Madrid, this defeat is the latest chapter in a concerning decline, as it marked a second straight trophyless domestic season, with the club now plagued by internal dysfunction and a lack of recruitment foresight.

The buildup to the match was dominated by reports of a violent locker-room altercation between Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni, resulting in half-million-euro fines for both and a head injury that kept Valverde out of the squad.

With Kylian Mbappé sidelined by a muscle tear and manager Álvaro Arbeloa forced to start academy prospect Gonzalo Garcia, Madrid lacked the cohesion to trouble a disciplined Barcelona. While Jude Bellingham had a second-half goal ruled out for offside, the visitors never truly looked capable of mounting a comeback.

In contrast, Hansi Flick has built a juggernaut. Despite missing Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, Barcelona played with terrifying efficiency to complete a successful defence of the league crown Flick won in his debut season.
