The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) residential candidate  for the 2027 general elections, Peter Obi has donated ₦10 million to the Catholic Maternity Hospital, Moniaya, in Ogoja Local Government Area of Cross River State, describing the decades-old mission hospital as a vital lifeline for maternal and child healthcare in the region.

Obi made the donation during a visit to the hospital after travelling from Enugu to Ogoja, where he commended the institution for its continued service despite limited resources.

According to him, the Catholic Maternity Hospital remains virtually the only maternity hospital serving the Ogoja area, providing essential care to thousands of women and newborns.

Highlighting Nigeria’s healthcare challenges, Obi expressed concern over the country’s persistently high maternal and infant mortality rates, noting that the figures represent preventable losses affecting countless families.

He also praised the hospital for operating a Tuberculosis and Leprosy Centre, describing its services as increasingly important amid growing healthcare needs.

To support the hospital’s operations, Obi presented a donation of ₦10 million and pledged to continue partnering with the institution in its efforts to improve healthcare delivery.

He called on federal, state and local governments, the private sector and public-spirited Nigerians to provide greater support for mission and faith-based healthcare institutions, arguing that investments in healthcare and education are essential for national development.

The former Anambra State governor reiterated that strengthening healthcare infrastructure and supporting institutions that serve vulnerable communities are critical to improving health outcomes across Nigeria.
