Rainstorm Kills Two, Destroys 50 Homes in Kaduna Community

KADUNA, NIGERIA — A devastating rainstorm has claimed the lives of two persons and destroyed more than 50 houses in Dokan Mai-Jama’a, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, leaving scores of residents displaced and in urgent need of assistance.

The Village Head of Dokan Mai-Jama’a, Alhaji Hamisu Tukur, confirmed the incident, saying the community suffered extensive damage following the heavy downpour.

Residents said the rainfall, which began around 6:41 p.m. on Monday, was accompanied by violent winds that lasted for over 40 minutes, wreaking havoc across the area. Homes were either completely destroyed or severely damaged, with roofs blown off and structures weakened beyond repair.

A visit to the affected community revealed scenes of distress, as families struggled to salvage what remained of their belongings. Many residents have been rendered homeless, taking refuge with neighbours and relatives, while others are left exposed to harsh weather conditions.

Heads of households were seen making frantic efforts to secure temporary shelter for their families amid growing uncertainty over their immediate future.

Victims of the disaster have appealed to the Kaduna State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) to urgently intervene and provide relief materials.

In a related development, the rainstorm also impacted parts of Sabon Gyero community, located within Millennium City in the same local government area, where several houses were damaged and more than 10 perimeter fences destroyed.

Eyewitnesses said the downpour also disrupted movement in the area, as floodwaters and debris blocked a major road, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.

Meanwhile, officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) have been deployed to Dokan Mai-Jama’a to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the damage and determine the level of assistance required.

Residents are now calling for swift government response to avert further humanitarian challenges as the rainy season intensifies.
