Arise Television co-anchor Rufai Oseni has expressed appreciation to Nigerians for the messages and calls of support he received following a tense exchange with a guest on The Morning Show.

Oseni’s reaction came after an interview with Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, ended abruptly on Friday.

Olayinka had declined to respond to questions from Oseni during the programme, leading to an exchange between the guest and the anchor before another presenter intervened and the interview was brought to an end.

In a lengthy message shared on social media after the incident, Oseni thanked Nigerians for what he described as an overwhelming show of support.

“I will like to thank you all for your messages of support and calls too numerous to respond to,” he wrote. “I am embarrassed and emboldened by your love.”

Oseni Cites History as Inspiration

Oseni said his determination to speak on issues concerning Nigeria was rooted in his study of the country’s history.

He particularly cited the experience of late Nigerian labour leader Pa Michael Imoudu and the 1945 general strike.

According to Oseni, Imoudu faced opposition from some Nigerians and sections of the political and media establishment despite his efforts to advance the interests of Nigerian workers.

He referred to opposition from some members of the National Youth Movement and criticism published by The Daily Service newspaper.

Oseni said the experience had taught him that people could sometimes oppose those fighting against systems that disadvantaged them.

“It takes a trained mind to see oppression,” he said.

He added that some people could support what he described as “the evil and ills of society” because they benefited from the existing system.

‘My Convictions Are Clear’

The broadcaster said his priorities were centred on love of country, God and the welfare of disadvantaged Nigerians.

Oseni said he did not expect to agree with people who benefited from what he described as the “ruination” of Nigeria.

He also acknowledged his own imperfections, saying he would make mistakes and experience both successes and setbacks.

However, he insisted that his commitment to challenging those in positions of authority would remain.

“I am not perfect, I will make my mistakes… but I can always assure you that the priority to speak truth to power will be my strength,” he said.

Oseni said he was determined to remain involved in conversations concerning poverty and the welfare of Nigerians who, in his words, had been left behind.

‘I Dey Kampe’

The broadcaster described the current period as an important moment in Nigeria’s national consciousness and said he was proud to be part of the conversation about the country’s future.

He said his objective was not to impress people or simply agree with them, but to contribute to what he considered the betterment of Nigeria.

“I am not here to impress you or agree with you but here to speak to the betterment of a country so blessed but so poor,” he said.

Oseni concluded his message with a declaration of resilience and appreciation for his supporters.

“I DEY KAMPE!!!!! I LOVE YOU!”

His message has generated further reactions on social media, with supporters praising his resolve, while others continue to debate the circumstances surrounding the Arise TV interview.

The latest development comes amid continuing public discussion about the role of television anchors in challenging guests and the responsibilities of public figures appearing on live broadcast programmes.
