‘We Cannot Grow Numb to This Pain’: New York Mayor Reacts as Seven‑Month‑Old Baby Killed in Brooklyn Shooting

A seven‑month‑old baby has been fatally shot in Brooklyn, prompting an emotional response from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who said the city cannot accept gun violence as normal.

“This is not the first family in our city to know this pain. Too many children have never grown up into becoming adults. Too many parents have had to bury those that they love the most,” Mamdani said.

“We cannot accept this as normal in our city. We cannot grow numb to this pain, and today is a devastating reminder of just how much more work there is to be done to combat gun violence across this city. I send my deepest condolences to all those carrying the weight of this enormous loss.”

Suspect in Custody

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that the suspected shooter is in custody.

“As we grieve this loss, I am grateful for the NYPD’s continued work to find all those responsible for this murder and to bring them to justice,” Tisch said.

Video recovered from the scene showed two males on a moped driving against traffic when one took out a gun and discharged at least two rounds, the commissioner said. The suspects drove away, and the moped later crashed into a car.

One of the men — who “fits the description of our shooter, based on both clothing and appearance” — has been taken into custody, Tisch added. The other suspect is still being sought.

Gun Violence Trends

While gun violence and shootings remain common across the United States, the New York City Police Department reported in January that 2025 was the safest year ever for gun violence in the city. The city recorded 688 shooting incidents in 2025, a decrease of 24 per cent from 2024.
