As Nigeria’s political landscape begins to take shape ahead of the 2027 general elections, prominent political economist and statesman Pat Utomi has reiterated his firm support for Peter Obi’s presidential ambition. In a statement posted on his official X account, Utomi clarified his position, emphasising that his backing is strictly for the top office.
“Peter Obi has my support for the presidency,” Utomi stated. However, he drew a hard line regarding the former Anambra State governor’s potential role in a future administration. “I am not supporting the idea of Peter Obi becoming somebody else’s Vice President,” he declared, adding a definitive ultimatum: “The day Peter Obi accepts a Vice Presidential position, I will walk away from his corner. I have said this plainly, and I stand by it.”
Utomi stressed that his stance is rooted in principles rather than personal allegiances. He explained that his primary concern is “the kind of leadership Nigeria needs and the direction in which we want our country to go.”
Beyond the 2027 ticket configuration, Utomi used the platform to advocate for a generational shift in Nigerian politics. He argued for a national conversation on age limits for executive office, proposing that presidential and gubernatorial candidates be capped at 70 years old.
“The Nigerian presidency should not become a retirement home for politicians,” Utomi warned. “Nigeria needs leadership that is focused on the future, not simply another cycle of political succession.”
Utomi concluded by urging Nigerians to scrutinise these principles as the nation moves closer to the next electoral cycle.
