Manhunt Launched for Driver
ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command says a gas plant fire at Liberty Junction, Byazhin, Abuja, has been contained after an unregistered Toyota 4Runner reportedly crashed into the facility.
The incident occurred at about 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2026, after the police received a distress call from a resident reporting a fire outbreak at a cooking gas sales plant in the area.
According to the police, officers from the Kubwa Police Division were immediately deployed to the scene, where they encountered a major fire that had spread to nearby shops and other properties. The police said the Federal Fire Service was contacted and responded to assist in containing the blaze.
Driver Allegedly Fled Scene
Preliminary findings by the police indicate that the fire was triggered when the driver of an unregistered Toyota 4Runner allegedly drove against traffic on the one-way road, lost control of the vehicle, and crashed into the nearby cooking gas plant. The impact reportedly caused an explosion and subsequent fire, which engulfed nearby shops and other properties.
The driver and other occupants of the vehicle allegedly fled the scene immediately after the incident. The FCT Police Command said it has established the identity of the driver and is currently making efforts to apprehend him.
No Casualties Recorded
The police said the fire has been brought under control and no casualties have been recorded. However, authorities said a detailed assessment of the extent and value of the property damage is still being carried out.
The police also assured residents that normal activities have resumed in the area and urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station.
The statement was issued by SP Josephine Adeh, Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Police Command, on September 27, 2026.
