Premier League side Chelsea have today, Wednesday, April 22, 2026, sacked head coach Liam Rosenior after less than four months in charge. The decision follows a 3-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday night which marked a run of seven losses in eight matches.
The result also dropped Chelsea to seventh, seven points behind fifth-placed Liverpool who have a game in hand, and extended the club’s worst scoring drought since 1912: five straight league games without a goal.
Rosenior, 41, was appointed in January on a deal to 2032 after Enzo Maresca left on New Year’s Day. He arrived from BlueCo-owned sister club Strasbourg, where he secured European qualification in his debut season.
His Chelsea tenure started brightly with four wins and two draws in the league. But form collapsed in March. Chelsea exited the Champions League to Paris Saint-Germain 8-2 on aggregate, just months after beating PSG in the 2025 Club World Cup final. Their only win in the last eight matches came via a 7-0 FA Cup thrashing of third-tier Port Vale.
Fans turned on Rosenior with loud boos during the Brighton loss, with the manager later saying he was “numb” and “angry” and demanding a better performance from his players. However, Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah countered immediately, insisting that the defeat had “nothing to do with effort.”
A club statement read: “Chelsea Football Club has today parted company with Head Coach Liam Rosenior,” adding that results “have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season.”
Calum McFarlane will serve as interim head coach through the end of the season, having previously filled the role when Maresca departed.
The club said it will “undertake a process of self-reflection” as it seeks long-term stability, with Rosenior becoming the fifth permanent managerial departure since the BlueCo takeover in May 2022.
Chelsea host a resurgent Leeds United in an FA Cup semi-final on Sunday.
