EDINBURGH, Scotland – A wildfire broke out on Arthur’s Seat, the extinct volcano overlooking Scotland’s capital Edinburgh, on Monday, May 25, spreading extensively across the landmark which is popular with walkers and tourists.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to the scene at around 6:50 p.m. (1650 GMT) on Monday.
Police closed a nearby path as firefighters assessed the blaze from a ridge below, while a police helicopter circled overhead.
Arthur’s Seat is the highest point of Holyrood Park, near Scotland’s parliament and the end of Edinburgh’s famous Royal Mile. Standing about 250 metres (820 feet) above sea level, it is a popular vantage point for visitors seeking views of the city.
No casualties or injuries have been reported at this time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
