AWKA, Anambra — Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has commended Professor Lilian Orogbu for what he described as purposeful representation and her efforts to empower constituents in the Awka North and South Federal Constituency.
Obi made the remarks after witnessing an empowerment programme organised by Orogbu in Awka, where vehicles, tricycles, motorcycles, refrigerators, grinding machines, and other productive assets were distributed to constituents.
According to Obi, the items should be viewed not merely as gifts but as tools capable of helping beneficiaries create livelihoods, strengthen their families, and become more economically self-reliant.
He praised Orogbu for what he described as a consistent commitment to public service, citing her interventions in education, infrastructure, scholarships, and human development.
“Prof. Orogbu has consistently demonstrated that public office should be about service,” Obi said.
He added that his engagements with Orogbu had frequently involved activities such as commissioning schools, inspecting roads, supporting scholarship initiatives, and participating in projects aimed at directly benefiting constituents.
Obi said such interventions represented the kind of public engagement that should be encouraged in Nigeria.
Reflecting on Orogbu’s record as a first-term legislator, Obi said her achievements suggested that she could make an even greater impact with more experience and responsibility in the National Assembly.
He commended Orogbu for her “courage, commitment and compassion” and praised residents of the Awka North and South Federal Constituency for supporting a representative whom he said had demonstrated that leadership should be measured by service, sacrifice, and tangible impact.
According to Obi, Nigeria’s progress would depend partly on changing the perception of public office from a position centred on what leaders receive to one focused on what they give back to the people.
“With clear leadership, a new Nigeria is possible,” he said.
