Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has emerged as the sole presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi was screened by a 17-man committee led by former Governor of Ebonyi State, Sam Egwu. By the time the party declared Obi as its sole candidate, he had already purchased the presidential election form.
The former Anambra governor arrived at the party’s national secretariat at approximately 6:45 pm and was accompanied by Senator Victor Umeh.
The Nigerian Democratic Congress thereafter extended its deadline for the collection of nomination forms for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly positions. The extension applies only to aspirants seeking tickets for State Houses of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate, and governorship positions.
After the screening process, Sam Egwu said the committee was satisfied with Obi’s performance:
“This is to certify that following the screening of the presidential aspirant of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), His Excellency Peter Obi, and being satisfied that he has complied with all the requirements of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and all provisions of the Electoral Act, and the satisfactory answers given by him to all the questions from members of the national screening committee, he is hereby cleared to contest in the presidential primaries of the party for the 2027 presidential election on a date to be announced by the party. Congratulations.”
Afterwards, Obi was presented with an official clearance letter along with the party’s official nomination form bearing the number 001.
