NIGERIA— The Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, Peter Obi has expressed deep sorrow over the recent building collapses in Anambra and Ogun states, describing the incidents as tragic reminders of the urgent need to strengthen building safety regulations across Nigeria.
In a statement released on Thursday, Obi lamented the collapse of a structure in Amaokpala, Anambra State, which reportedly housed, among others, some students of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko. He noted that although the two people who died were not students of the institution, their deaths were a painful loss.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to their families and loved ones. I also pray for the quick recovery of those who sustained injuries,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor also reacted to another reported building collapse in Ogun State, which claimed lives only days after the Amaokpala incident.
He described the back-to-back tragedies as a wake-up call for authorities at all levels to prioritise public safety through stricter enforcement of building regulations and compliance with approved construction standards.
Obi commended the governments of Anambra and Ogun states, the Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, emergency responders, security agencies, and other stakeholders for their swift rescue and relief efforts, noting that their coordinated response helped prevent greater loss of life.
He urged governments and regulatory agencies nationwide to conduct regular structural integrity assessments and ensure that buildings meet established safety standards to prevent avoidable disasters.
“The safety and welfare of our citizens, especially our young people, must remain central to our development efforts,” Obi stated. “We must continue to invest not only in educational infrastructure but also in ensuring that every environment in which our people live and learn is safe and fit for purpose.”
Obi offered prayers for the victims, their families, those injured, and students affected by the Amaokpala incident, expressing hope for the speedy recovery of the injured and eternal rest for those who lost their lives.
He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Nigerian students, saying that investing in their education, safety, and well-being is essential to building the “New Nigeria” envisioned by many Nigerians.
