The Nigeria Police Force has initiated disciplinary proceedings against an officer accused of extra-judicially killing a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, involved a 28-year-old man identified as Mene Ogidi. According to the Delta State Police Command, operatives attached to Area Command Effurun had acted on credible intelligence from members of the public. The suspect was reportedly apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.
Police officers were immediately deployed to the scene to take the suspect into custody. However, in a development that has drawn strong condemnation, the team leader, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in violation of established procedures, resulting in the suspect’s death.
The Commissioner of Police for Delta State, Yemi Oyeniyi, described the act as a clear breach of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure guiding the conduct of officers. He expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased, as well as to concerned members of the public, assuring them that justice would be served.
Following the report, the CP ordered the immediate arrest of ASP Usman. The officer was subsequently taken into custody and transferred from Effurun to the State Headquarters in Asaba for preliminary actions. He has since been moved to Abuja, where he is expected to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee at the Force Headquarters.
The police command confirmed that ASP Usman has been formally queried and will face both disciplinary measures and possible prosecution depending on the outcome of the committee’s proceedings.
Reiterating its stance, the Delta State Police Command emphasised its commitment to upholding the rule of law, respect for human rights, and professionalism. The command stressed that it maintains zero tolerance for extra-judicial actions, recklessness, and any conduct capable of eroding public trust.
The case has continued to draw attention, with many calling for transparent proceedings and accountability as the investigation progresses.
