Former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mike Igini, has warned that politicians could compromise National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) personnel lists to manipulate Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Speaking on ARISE News, Igini raised concerns about the infiltration of electoral institutions by politicians and the potential compromise of personnel records used in the conduct of elections.
He called on the NYSC to strengthen its verification procedures to ensure the integrity and authenticity of its personnel lists, warning that compromised records could allow individuals posing as corps members to serve as presiding officers during elections.
Igini stressed that such vulnerabilities could create opportunities for electoral manipulation and undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
He emphasised the importance of embracing technology and strengthening institutional safeguards to prevent electoral malpractice and protect the integrity of the 2027 general elections.
His warning highlights the need for greater transparency, accountability and effective verification mechanisms within institutions involved in Nigeria’s electoral process.
