Wula Community, Cross River State — A 14-year-old girl identified as Nancy Peter has died after reportedly being subjected to severe physical assault by her mother and a pastor during a so-called “deliverance” session in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, 1 June 2026. According to local reports, Nancy was accused of theft by her mother, Mrs. Agnes Peter, who allegedly handed her over to Pastor Samson Roman Dago, General Overseer of Good News of Jesus Ministry, also known as Banga Church.
During the deliverance exercise, the teenager was allegedly beaten repeatedly in an attempt to “cast out evil spirits.” She reportedly lost consciousness and was rushed to a nearby medical facility, where she was pronounced dead.
Arrests Made
Officers of the Cross River State Police Command have arrested both Mrs. Agnes Peter and Pastor Samson Roman Dago. The suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death.
Community leaders in Wula are said to have intervened after the situation escalated before handing the matter over to the police.
Public Outrage
Nancy Peter’s death has triggered widespread condemnation across Cross River State and Nigeria, with many describing the incident as a tragic case of child abuse disguised as spiritual deliverance.
Child rights advocates and residents have expressed shock over the use of extreme violence against a minor under the guise of religious practice. The case has renewed concerns about unregulated deliverance sessions in some churches, where physical abuse is sometimes justified as exorcism.
A police spokesperson confirmed that a full investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of death and establish the level of responsibility of those involved.
As the inquiry continues, residents of Wula Community remain in mourning for the young girl, whose life was cut short in what many have described as a preventable tragedy.
